April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Across the nation, reports of child abuse and neglect have decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
What we don’t know yet is if actual occurrences of abuse and neglect have decreased, increased, or remained steady. There are many concerns that the increased financial and emotional stress of the pandemic, along with the decreased hours children have been physically in school may be cause for concern.
Unfortunately, with the increase in isolation necessitated by the pandemic, we do not have good information available. What we do know is that a continued focus on community-based prevention is more important than ever.
Strengthening families and supporting children safely in their community is the most effective way to prevent child abuse in both traditional times and in a pandemic. During National Child Abuse Prevention Month, I extend my thanks to our staff, volunteers, and supporters who make it possible for Children’s Friend to support kids and families each and every day. Through your work and support we don’t just keep kids safe we help them develop to their full potential.
Thank You,
David Caprio, President, and Chief Executive Officer
